Short answer: festivals typically combine workshops, shows and social dancing. Marathons are often built around many hours of social dancing. Encuentros are often smaller and more focused on the social floor. These are tendencies, not rules, so read each organizer’s description before you choose.
Facts come from the organizers’ own pages and were last checked on 24 October 2026. Availability and rules change, so confirm everything with the organizer before you book. If a detail isn’t listed, we say “not stated”.
Short definitions, with caveats
- Festival: usually a larger event with a varied programme: classes, performances and several milongas.
- Marathon: usually a dance-focused weekend with many hours of milongas.
- Encuentro: usually a gathering centred on social dancing, often smaller. The word is used in different ways, so check what the organizer means.
Organizers use the words loosely. An event name is a hint, not a guarantee.
Side-by-side comparison
| Format | Typical focus | Typical rhythm | A real example |
|---|---|---|---|
| Festival | Often workshops, plus milongas, shows and sometimes live music | Several sessions across a few days; a mix of learning and social dancing | Heidelberg’s New Year weekend combines six milongas with a six-workshop Winter School |
| Marathon | Often a long, dance-focused weekend with many milongas and few or no classes | Social dancing is the main activity; sessions can run late | Budapest’s New Year marathon is built around milongas across several days |
| Encuentro | Often smaller and focused on social dancing, sometimes with a particular style or atmosphere | Depends on the organizer; some add talks or shows | Bologna Tango Encuentro adds a travelling show and a talk with live singing |
Workshops and shows
Many people assume marathons have no classes. Often that’s true, but formats overlap. Totally in Tango’s double-role weekends in Eindhoven and Milan are built around social dancing and also list workshops. If you want to learn, check the programme rather than the label. For festivals, check whether workshops are included or booked separately. At Heidelberg’s New Year weekend, workshops are an add-on to the milonga pass.
Social dancing and music
Look at the milonga schedule: how many sessions, how late they end, and whether there are DJs or live music. Some festivals schedule live acts inside long dance sessions. Others, like many marathons, are mainly DJ-led.
Registration and role policies
Registration practices vary a lot. Some events accept a form and then confirm places, some balance leaders and followers, and some accept couples or singles. Read the policy for your edition. See your first tango marathon: what to check before booking.
Expectations and floor etiquette
Local customs differ. Ask the organizer how invitations work, whether there is a dress code and how the floor is managed. If you are new to the customs, this guide to going to a milonga alone covers the basics.
Hybrid formats
Heidelberg’s New Year weekend combines a Winter School of workshops with a series of milongas, and mixes traditional and neo music. A Bologna encuentro includes a talk and a show. Don’t expect a single event to fit one category neatly.
Choose by your goals
- Learn something new and see performances: a festival with a workshop programme.
- Dance as much as possible: a marathon, after checking sessions and end times.
- A smaller, social gathering: an encuentro, after reading how the organizer describes it.
- Unsure: ask the organizer what a typical day looks like.
Questions
What is a tango encuentro?
Usually a gathering focused on social dancing, often smaller than a festival. The organizer’s description is the only reliable guide.
Do tango marathons have workshops?
Often not, but some events mix formats and list workshops. Check the programme.
Is a festival better for a first event?
It depends on what you want. A festival offers more variety. A marathon offers more hours of social dancing. See the first marathon checklist.
Are encuentros invitation-only?
Some limit attendance or ask you to apply. There is no universal rule, so check the registration page.
