Short answer: it depends on the event and the edition. Some marathons accept solo registrations, some ask for couples, and many do both. Read the current registration page, then ask the organizer about anything it doesn’t say.
Can you register alone?
Many events let you, but not all. Some accept solo registrations, some ask for couples, and many allow both. Organizers may also balance leaders and followers, so a registration is not always a confirmed place. Policies can change from one edition to the next, so check the current registration page of every event you plan to attend.
How event policies differ
- Solo and couple registration. You choose, and may state a partner’s name.
- Couples only. Rare for some formats, but possible. Read the page.
- Role balance. Organizers may balance leaders and followers, which can affect how quickly a role fills.
- Caps and waiting lists. Spaces can be limited. A registration is not automatically a place until the organizer confirms it.
- Workshops. Some classes rotate partners, others use a fixed partner.
A partner for registration versus a partner for dancing
Registering with someone is an administrative step. Dancing with them is something else. You can register alone and still dance with plenty of people, or register together with a friend and dance mostly with others. Be clear which one you are asking for, and see how to find a tango partner for a marathon or festival if you do need one.
Questions to ask the organizer
- Can I register without a partner?
- Do you balance leaders and followers? How does that affect my registration?
- Is there a waiting list, and how is it ordered?
- Are the workshops danced with a fixed partner or rotated?
- If I register with someone who then cancels, what happens to my place?
A short template: “Hello, I’m a leader and would like to attend Liège Tango Marathon 2027. Can I register individually, and are workshops rotated? Thank you.”
Meeting people before you arrive
Going alone doesn’t mean arriving as a stranger. Join the event’s group or social page if there is one, introduce yourself with your role and what you hope to enjoy, and look at who else is going. You can also post your plans on El Compas, name the event and dates, and see who is heading the same way.
Connect with dancers heading to your event
Create a profile, name the event you are going to and share your dates. Posting a request is not a registration: always register with the organizer.
