Short answer: say which roles you dance and how you like to switch, check each event’s rules, and write a request that makes your preferences clear.
Describe your experience in each role
Level can differ between roles. Say so: “advanced leader, intermediate follower.” Years of dancing add context but don’t promise compatibility.
Discuss switching
Agree how you will switch: by song, by class, by day. Some pairs like to alternate every exercise, others stay in one role for a whole workshop.
Compatible communities
Double role, queer tango and role-fluid dancing overlap but are not the same thing. Role is what you dance, identity is who you are, and community is where you feel at home. Don’t assume one tells you the others. El Compas lets you choose leader, follower or double role, and lists queer tango among tango styles.
Check workshop and registration rules
- Does registration ask for one role only?
- Is role switching allowed in classes?
- How does the organizer balance roles?
If the page doesn’t say, ask the organizer.
Write your request
(Fictional) Double role, advanced, looking for another double-role dancer for the workshops at Noches de Abril Geneva Tango Festival. We would alternate roles by class.
(Fictional) Leader, intermediate, also following occasionally, looking for a practice partner in Prague who enjoys switching roles on Sundays.
